Cannon Hill Park
The 96.4FM BRMB Birmingham Cash
for Kids Concert 1999 held in Cannon Hill Park on 24th July 1999 was a roaring
success, even by BRMB's high standards. The gates opened at 11am and the
crowds flooded into the sun-drenched park. And sun drenched was how it would
stay for most of the day as the 35,000 strong crowd enjoyed the music of
Precious, Lucan, Damage, Ellie Campbell, Caprice, Ronan Keating, Dina Carroll,
Honeyz, Kele LeRoc, 911, Nightcrawlers, Pacifica, Tin Tin Out, 21st Centry
Girls, Thunderbug, Seafruit, Phats and Small, Fierce, A-1, Hepburn, The
3 Jays, Five, Aswad, Adam Rickitt, Gary Barlow, Ocean Colour Scene, Culture
Club, Madness and of course, UB40.
The BRMB DJ's were out in force with Scott Hughes, Jezza, Elliott Webb,
Tammy Gooding, Nick Jackson, Graham Mack, Nick Simpson - now reverting from
his stage name to Rrrrricardo, and Les Ross in a shockingly bad gold sparkle
jacket and hat cambo, all taking turns to bring on the bands. Scott Hughes
introduced 911, A-1 and Five and felt the power of these bands in the face
of several thousand early-teenage girls who's screaming and whistleblowing
can be held accoutable for much of the ear-ache to follow.
Once Five had left the stage, the first of the headliners could come
on. 80's band revivied, Culture Club gave some of their newer tracks but
the beggest reception for the highly professional act came with Carma Chameleon.
Madness followed with their huge songs from the past and their new hit -
Lovestruck. Then, as the light began to fade, on moved UB40 with their two
hour set and when darkness came a lightshow to accompany it. The set, with
tracks from old and new albums - King and Tyler to Labour of Love III tracks,
was as the band had played at their gigs in their 1998-99 tours finishing
off with Legalise It.
UB40 were a great end to a glorious day in the sun in Cannon Hill Park
raising shed-loads of Cash for Kids. Thanks must go to BRMB for organising
the whole event and putting it out live on the radio and the 'net, to Central
TV for the big-screen vision and for getting us on the tele, to everyone
who went for making it such a good atmosphere and to that girl in the torquise
bikini and her teenie mates for completely deafening me with their screaming
and whistle blowing.
Thanks too to all the BRMB DJs for giving us shouts on the radio afterwards,
especially Ian Danter for mine! Roll on Cash for Kids 2000.
